July 31- August 3 – Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, the largest Portuguese festival in the United States, is at Madeira Field, New Bedford. AUGUST 1-3 – Club Madirense S.S. Scramento 94th annual Feast of the Blessed Sacrament. Founded in 1915, this traditional mid-summer event has become the largest Portuguese Feast in the world and the largest ethnic festival in New England, attracting over 300,000 visitors. Featuring a delicious array of Portuguese and American foods, beverages and spirits, fine entertainment, midway, carnival rides, a 5K-road race and the largest parade in New Bedford with floats, marching bands and more. Visit the Museum of Madeiran Heritage, which will be open at no charge during the feast, and view an extensive collection of photographs and artifacts that enlighten to you the story of Madeiran immigration to America. AUGUST 1-3 – 36th Annual Buzzards Bay Regatta. Hosted by Beverly Yacht Club in cooperation with New Bedford, Mattapoisett and Low Tide Yacht Clubs and Community Boating Center of New Bedford, this event is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Over 1,200 amateur and professional sailors and 450 boats will compete in 17 classes including one-design, multihull, classic boats, and PHRF. Racing takes place in 5 circles throughout the north end of Buzzards Bay, with the large Laser fleet sailing out of historic Fort Taber in New Bedford. AUGUST 4-15 – Summer at the Marion Natural History Museum: Two opportunities for kids to get outside this summer. “Life Along the Shore,” for kids entering grade 1&2, explores the plants and animals that live in our area’s many coastal habitats. With the use of games, journals and introductory science techniques, this will be a wonderful first look at life in our coastal environment. Programs run Monday- Friday from 9am-noon. AUGUST 4 &5 – Do you have a story idea that you feel would make a great film? Hopeful screenwriters, ScriptBiz™ is coming this August to Providence, RI with a two-day workshop created and presented by the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Experienced members of the film community will guide students down the right path to putting their creative ideas onto paper and getting their final product into the right hands. This year’s topics will include training writers on the specific aspects of storytelling, including plot, character, and dialogue; instruction on using appropriate computer software and formatting tools to aid in the writing process. Finally, students will learn how to market their story and receive compensation for their final screenplays. At the Renaissance Providence Hotel. 5 Avenue of the Arts, Providence.
